Bus time!

Look, the Poetry Bus is going to be a five o'clock on a Monday thing for me - I'm just not organised enough to be at the stop on a Sunday.

Okay, now that we've got that clear, here's this weeks challenge. Set by the talented Ms Rachel Fox we were asked to write about a childhood tv/book/comic character. I chose my beloved Mr Benn. And as if by magic the poem appeared...

Should Have Known, You Lived on Festive Road

Oh, Mr Benn!
My favourite among men,
when I was five years old.
I thought you were delish
Despite the fancy dress fetish
And the fact that you were
probably gay.

Mr Benn, gay? No! It never occured to me.First captain Pugwash, now this! My tattered life is in more tatters.
I knew he was mean.He never , ever paid for anything.I just presumed he was from Cavan, despite the accent.

The Bus was originally Monday ('the Monday Poem' in fact) so you're just staying true to the roots of the movement, sister.

I loved Mr Benn. Really loved him. But then I always have been at least a good fraction fag hag.

Niamh - that is sounding suspiciously like you don't actually know who Mr Benn is?!?!? Say it ain't so??

D'Oub! The apogee of the idiom. Or something.
Anyway, subtext... not even Peter Goulding did subtext! And whilst that concerning Cap'n Pugwash is just urban legend (Master Mate, not Master Bates) the whiff of the San Francisco Bath House is strong in Mr Benn.
Which one's your favourite? I like the dragon, but then the balloonist is very good, and the big game hunter, and oh, that one with the cowboys and indians playing hide and seek and...

Putting it on now. Poem brilliant.

Niamh must be joking. Surely.

I'd choose gentleman Mr Benn over Popeye any day...

Titus - all brilliant, couldn't pick a favourite! And yes, surely Niamh must be kidding - it's incomprehensible that someone could be unaware!!

Jinksy - here,here!

Another childhood hero turns out to have feet of clay. Oh well.
